چکیده

This paper deals with cutting/packing problems in which there is a set of pieces to be allocated and arranged in a set of "containers." In an apparel manufacturing application, the containers might be unused areas of the fabric after large pieces have been placed, and the pieces of interest might be the smaller pieces. In a sheet metal application, the containers could be the sheets themselves, and the pieces the entire set of pieces to be arranged. The specific problem addressed takes as input a set of groups (of pieces), and mappings from pieces to groups and groups to containers. The method in which the groups are generated and the particular geometric constraints (e.g., translation only, or translation plus rotation) is not critical for the methods developed here. This paper presents an integer programming formulation of the multiple-container group assignment problem (MCGAP). Based on long and/or highly variable solution times for some problem instances, a Lagrangian heuristic procedure is developed along with a local improvement heuristic. When combined together these methods yield a powerful solution technique, reaching the optimal solution in all but one problem instance tested, while using relatively little CPU time. Moreover, solution times are more predictable than when standard branch & bound methods are used. Cases when all pieces are distinct and when certain pieces form equivalence classes are treated. key words: packing problems, cutting stock, integer programming, Lagrangian relaxation, heuristic, covering problems

A Lagrangian relaxation-based heuristic for the vehicle routing with full container load

We address a problem of vehicle routing that arises in picking up and delivering full container load from/to an intermodal terminal. The substantial cost and time savings are expected by efficient linkage between pickup and delivery tasks, if the time of tasks and the suitability of containers for cargo allow. As this problem is NP-hard, we develop a subgradient heuristic based on a Lagrangian ...

A new metaheuristic genetic-based placement algorithm for 2D strip packing

Given a container of fixed width, infinite height and a set of rectangular block, the 2D-strip packing problem consists of orthogonally placing all the rectangles such that the height is minimized. The position is subject to confinement of no overlapping of blocks. The problem is a complex NP-hard combinatorial optimization, thus a heuristic based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it. I...

Approximate Circle Packing in a Rectangular Container: Integer Programming Formulations and Valid Inequalities

A problem of packing a limited number of unequal circles in a fixed size rectangular container is considered. The aim is to maximize the (weighted) number of circles placed into the container or minimize the waste. Frequently, the problem is formulated as a nonconvex continuous optimization problem which is solved by heuristic techniques combined with local search procedures. A new formulation ...

Integrated Competitive Pricing and Transshipment Problem for Short Life Cycle Products’ Supply Chain

This paper integrates competitive pricing and network design problems for the short life cycle products. The pricing problem determines selling prices of the products for different life cycle phases in a competitive market, as well as acquisition management of returned products. Besides, the selling and acquisition prices are related to the distance between distribution centers and customers. T...

An Interval Graph-based Tabu Search Framework for Multi-dimensional Packing

Packing is a vast and continuously growing field in the area of Operations Research and Combinatorial Optimization. Roughly speaking, given a set of items and a set of containers, packing problems are concerned with the loading of the items into the containers, according to some packing rules and optimizing a performance measure. Under this broad definition, we find a wide set of real-life and ...
